Next week, I'll be spending my day with Tim Loughton - Shadow Minister for Children. I want to find out why young people are so disillusioned with politics - only 40% of 18 - 25 year olds vote in a general election!

If you have any burning questions, feel free to post them on here - I will ask them in the awkward silences....

can i ask you a question? why does the government not lot 16 year olds vote for something?
do they think that 16 year olds are to immature to be voting or isit because they just don't want to spend more money?
It's not a case of 16-year-olds being immature but the majority of people this age could not give a monkeys about politics. We legislate against the majority and not the minority. A youth parliamentarian said that some people can drink and drive safely, but most can't. The same principles applies here.

Also - if we can't get the current age group of 18-25 year olds voting, we have not got a hope in hell for those under 18. It would cost a fortune promoting this new law in schools and colleges. Not forgetting the fact of extra ballot papers and labour.
You know I'm not so sure that its the vast majority who could not give a monkeys. I might just be at a fairly political school but a lot of debates do spark up about politics in the most unlikely of lessons. Certainlythere are more of us who care about who's making decisions that affect us than those who can drive safely drunk...

I also know of another youth parlimentarian who said (in commons) that he thought it was rediculous that 16 year olds can sleep with their MP if they want but not vote for them.

I'm still not sure if we should get the vote at 16, but if it is so few of us that would turn up then surely we don't need to worry about extra labour etc!
Tim Loughton said that young people are more engaged with politics than ever before - look at the guys from Green Peace, Compass Youth etc - we care about the issues that affect us but we are disillusioned with party politics. And that is what we need to tackle
