SHOULD THERE BE COMMUNITY SERVICE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE?
The Conservatives have set out new proposals to engage young people in a civilian "National Service" Programme, which would require school leavers to complete 2 months of Summer community service projects within the community and would be funded through taxation.

Cameron describes the benefits of such a scheme as "giving [young people] a sense of purpouse, a sense of optimism, a sense of belonging", as well as helping to resolve religious divides. Cameron gained inspiration for the idea from his own experiences of community work at Eton, and belives this is the main way to help young people who have lost their way.
But will it really do any of these things? Is this another attempt by politicians to harness the issue of youth? Will anyone even sign up or is it even anything new? Most importantly, is this a fundamental misunderstanding of youth problems and the way to solve them?
Please comment - is this a good thing or a bad thing for young people!?

Hi its good to have such programmes.these people need to be shown good ways of working hard and for the development of their communities.
young people are only involved programes like HIV/AIDS theory education forgeting vocatuonal and yet vocational is an answer to every young people's challenges.
l do recommend for such programmes and perhaps include in the element of vocational.

Well done, Davey, another great idea based on your life that can relate to the British public.
Community service is highly under/over defined - I'm in my school council and we do work in the local community. Surely that means I've providing community service?
I think we need a definition of community service before we're subjected to it.

Community service, if compulsory, would be a farce. People would carry their term out and be done with it, save the few exceptions who would volunteer anyway.
This is effectively state-sponsored boy scouts/girl guides etc. Not a good idea, and I would criticize the notion more fully if the ConDem govt would be so gracious as to furnish us with the details.
