The General Elections - Should the voting age be lowered?

Only a month or two until the elections make their way and the people of Britain walk into the booths and halls and churches and schools to give their democratic say on who should lead the country.

But what I fail to understand is this; if we live in a so-called democracy, which consists of ''for the people, by the people'' then why a) does every decision only go through the ministers and the Queen and not through the people and b) do children not get to vote?

Starting with point (a), democracy says that it is ''for the people, by the people'' and if we live in a democratic constitution, then why don't we get a say on EVERY decision passed in parliament? You may be thinking 1) that's too inconvenient and 2) that's what the ministers are there for. So in that case, we elect these people to make the decisions for us. So in which case, it's not a democracy, it's something else. So we don't live in a democracy. Brilliant. Britain's going out to implement democracy (a traditional Western idea) in Middle East countries, when we don't even know how it works or what it means.

Point (b), if democracy is ''for the people, by the people'' why don't children get the vote? Sure, most children aren't involved or care about politics, and that's the fault of boring ministers. But in any case, are children not people? It's just like not allowing women to vote. Sure,  in Ancient civilisations, where democracy developed, only Men voted, but times have changed and now women vote as well. Why can't we go a step further and give children the vote? In terms of an age range, I think we should look at when most kids have enough sense to understand different political parties and understand the distinctions. British politicians today should now make an effort to interest the youth into politics - and that's every child - and if they don't know how to, they should ask the people that would know, i.e. KIDS.

So what do you think - should the voting age be lowered?

I think it should because in almost every county there is a young peoples council - that deal with issues in the area. Lots of adults dont do this and lots dont even vote!
Exactly - if the youth can tackle issues in a specific area, why can't they choose National government. And again, re-iterating the point of an ''untrue'' democracy.
exactly society dosen't trust young people at all. at sixteen you can get a job, buy and drink alcohol, get married or drive different types of vehicles. and you have no say what so ever in how are country is run. I think your topic is in the press alot at he moment but certain subjects the goverment seemed to have missed- such as the topic on my blog. I know the blog is long but i would really appreciate another opinion because it is my first.
