Election

I apologise for my lack of activity but I've been whipped up into the mad world of electioneering and I'm out on across Scotland everyday campaigning in the election. My own role aside, I want to say that there is just over a week until the election. This is one of the most unpredictable elections ever, with lots of new factors affecting who might be Prime Minister in just over a week. What is important is that you vote. At each election about 60% of people vote, which means that millions of…See More

The EU. A good or bad thing?

The EU is something a lot of people in the UK don't know about. My question is about whether the EU is a good or a bad thing, although this is a very broad question; so what I want to do is explain firstly about what it is, secondly about who runs it and thirdly about where it could go. I want to say early on however that I am a bit of a europhile and so it is likely that I will me marginally biased towards the EU, but I will endeavor to stay neutral.Firstly I want to say what exactly it is.…See More

Alternative vote

Recently the Houses of Parliament have passed a motion to have a referendum on Alternative Vote. In this blog post I want to just briefly explain what we have now (First past the Post [FPTP]) and Alternative Vote (AV).Britain has used FPTP for a long time. What it involves is the country being split into 650-odd constituencies all of several thousand people and then they all choose one candidate by putting a cross next to their name. Although Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have all got…See More

Expenses

What does the Expenses scandal really mean? And is it a bad thing?:Well, a few people in the houses of parliamet (a minority) have been setting out a defense of the expense scandal/ You must remember that it only works the way it does because the people up until this point have seen it as a good system. What the expenses scandal has been based on has been three points; firstly the point that MPs are playing the system which has been a minority as I'll explain), secondly that MPs aren't earning…See More

"Shocking :( One thing I find strange is that the UN is launching an appeal to find $550 million. when Obama just announced that he'll ask congress for an extra $33 billion (!!!!) to fight two wars. Unfair? What do you guys think...?"

Help the people of Haiti

This week there was a terrible disaster in Haiti, a nation already suffering from problems with famine, poverty and crime. You've probably heard that there has been an earthquake there recently. Well it is something quite important because of where it's hit and who it is affecting. The Earthquake registered as 7.0Mw which is a very large one, and was only a few miles from the capital city of Haiti; Port-au-Prince, which is home to over a million people. (roughly the size of Birmingham) Haiti is…See More

It's a big year! :D

For those political enthusiasts such as myself this year is a pretty major one. Why? Well I'm sure you've heard something about an election.Yes, the election is coming soon and if you're over 18 it's time to think about looking to the main parties to think about who you are going to vote for. I don't want to talk to you about the parties, but I'll link you to all of their websites if you want to read them. I want to talk about why it's important you vote, and I also want to say why it's…See More

Why are we in Afghanistan?

Public opinion of the war is very low just now, the newpapers and media are attacking the war, but why are we there in the first place is what I want to ask and answer in this post. The first mistake people make about Afghanistan is that they think it's been at war since 2001. Actually there has been a state of civil war there since 1979. What happened back then is the Soviet Union invaded in order to set up a communist state and the US gave weapons to the Mujahadeen who later made up parts of…See More

Copenhagen or bust

I have no doubt that people will be reading about Copenhagen in the news or at least hearing about it from somewhere. If you haven't then it's likely you will hear something about it, and the reason is that if the Governments of the world don't get an agreement on sorting climate change then there will be millions of lives in danger. Most of the world has accepted Climate Change is happening and so the question is now how we can stop it or even if we can. What I want to do in this blog post is…See More

Poverty in the UK, it's a real thing.

When I speak to most people about poverty I ask them where they think of when I say poverty. They say places like Africa and India, but very few people actually name places in the UK. I'd like to clarify that people in the UK are not by any means more important as those who live in other nations with poverty, but it is a very real thing in our country. When people think of poverty, they think of someone in a shanty town with children who are very skinny and trying to get by. In this country this…See More
