So for the past two years or so, the developed world has been hit with 'twilight mania.' Girls have begun to fantasize about 100 year old immortal, bloody thirsty boys and hundreds of vampire spin offs have been released in the form of tv and books, not to mention countless fan fictions.
I'm writing today to tell you why I hate twilight. Yes, you heard me. I'm a 15 year old english girl and yet I hate twilight. Why could this be? Read on...
For one thing, the book is atrociously written-
It contains words that don't even exist ('handsomer' anyone?) and too many adjectives. Stephenie Meyer spends pages and pages simply describing Edward and his 'perfect face,' and most importantly, how much Bella hates life. Which leads me on to the next point-
It plays on teenage vulnerability and angst-
The reason twilight attracts so many readers is simple- because the fan base is mainly young girls who instantly fall in love with the idea of being in love. Bella's constant whining about how insecure she feels about everything, her indecisiveness and her huge crush on Edward are typical experiences for a teenager of today. Because we sympathise, we want to read more.
It contains some of the biggest cliches ever-
Boy meets girl. Girl instantly falls for boy due to his attractiveness/cool exterior/inability to look at her properly. Girl despairs. Boy tells girl he's always loved her. All is happy. Ok so there are a few other problems involving the boy's thirst for blood but this plot has been seen 100s of times. Plus the idea of 'vegetarian' vampires was covered a few years ago in the 'Cirque du Freak' series. It's quite obvious that it has been pieced together.
The hype about it is ridiculous-
Every time a film comes out there's hype. I'll admit that when I saw the films I was excited, but that was due to the fact that I was with a big group of friends (we drew fangs on our faces) and most of them do not share my opinions on how awful the books are. There's also the small mention of Taylor Lautner without a top on... but that's another subject for another day. The point is, the films are awful unless you're a hyper teenage girl going to see it for the first time. The dialogue is beyond dull and they drag on far too long, never really leading anywhere. I'll admit that the soundtracks are pretty brilliant, but overall not a fan.
Robert Pattison and Kristen Stewart-
Sorry, but I hate how many awards K-Stew has won for her portrayal of Bella. All she does for the whole duration of the films is bite her lip, struggle to make conversation and annoy me with her weird teeth. As for Robert Pattison, I loved him as Cedric Diggory, but the cult of R-Patz is really irritating- he is not the most gorgeous bloke on the planet and we'd all do well to leave him alone to live his life.
Some funny videos for those that share my opinion-
